After missing nearly a full year due to injuries, Rafael Nadal, 37, finally returned to action at the Brisbane International in January.
But during the competition, the Spaniard suffered a hip injury that prevented him from competing in the Australian Open.
Although Nadal faced Carlos Alcaraz in an exhibition match on Sunday, he stated he is not yet prepared “to play at the highest level”.
The 22-time news champion posted on Instagram, saying, “I have to withdraw from this amazing tournament with great sadness.”
“Everyone is aware of my passion for Indian Wells and how much I like playing here.
