With his victory, the Slovenian has now caught up to four-time event winner Roberto Heras (2000–2005).
Stage 21 was a 26.4km time trial, and Roglic, 34, led Decathlon-AG2R-La Mondiale’s Ben O’Connor by two minutes and two seconds going into it.
The Bora-Hansgrohe rider confirmed his victory on that stage by finishing second.
After winning stage 19, Roglic overtook O’Connor of Decathlon-AG2R-La Mondiale as the overall race leader with a time of 26 minutes and 59 seconds. His total time was 81 hours, 49 minutes, and 18 seconds.
I pushed because I had to go for it otherwise it would have been considerably harder,” Roglic remarked. “It was difficult in the end.
“My team and I all sacrifice since it’s what we do for a living. I’m glad I could accomplish it, and I’m grateful.”
Stefan Kung of Switzerland won the last stage in 26:28, while Mattia Cattaneo of Italy finished third in 26:70.
Kung, who won his maiden Grand Tour stage, stated, “It’s always nice if you win with more than half a minute, it shows you were absolutely the best, there was no coincidence today.”
It’s quite pleasant. It ultimately pays off for all of our teamwork. I constantly strive to act professionally and make the most of it.
