In a rare breach of security in one of the most peaceful nations in the Middle East, shooting outside a mosque in Muscat, the capital of Oman, killed at least six people, including four Pakistanis and one Indian, the Omani police said on Tuesday.
Officers have completed “procedures for dealing with shooting,” according to police, and three of the attackers were also slain.
Omani officials said that one of the victims of the gun incident was a police officer.
Twenty of the at least 50 injured Pakistani expatriate workers were “treated for bullet wounds in three hospitals in Muscat,” according to Pakistan’s Ambassador to Oman, Imran Ali, who spoke to The National.
He noted that others who had received minor injuries had been released.
But according to Oman’s police, 28 persons of “different nationalities,” including a security guard, were also hurt.
“The Royal Oman Police have responded to a shooting incident that occurred in the vicinity of a mosque in the Al-Wadi Al-Kabir area,” the police stated in a statement.
They have not stated if they have made any arrests or whether they have determined the attack’s motivation. Additionally, the assailants’ identities have not been made public.
