A former professional ice hockey player from Belarus, Konstantin Koltsov, 42, was discovered dead at a Miami, Florida, hotel on Monday. He was in the city to cheer on Sabalenka at the Open of Miami.
Sabalenka, 25, posted on Instagram, saying, “Konstantin’s death is an unthinkable tragedy, and while we were no longer together, my heart is broken.”
“Please respect my privacy and his family’s privacy during this difficult time.”
Sabalenka, who is now ranked second in the world by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), intends to play against her close friend Paula Badosa of Spain on Friday in the Miami Open, despite Koltsov’s passing.
Police in Miami-Dade County confirmed on Tuesday that they responded to a call at a resort in Miami about a man who allegedly jumped off a balcony.
However, Yulia Mikhailova, Koltsov’s ex-wife, has stated that she doesn’t think he committed suicide and that “most likely, he was very drunk” when he passed away.
