This was a significant number, but it still fell short of the one-million deportations per year that had been set by the federal government. Minnesota Immigration Raids Spark Protests After Noem took office, the most significant controversy began following immigration operations conducted in Minnesota. Agents from the federal government launched an extensive enforcement campaign targeting undocumented immigrants. Raids were conducted mainly around Minneapolis. Large protests were held in the region. The scale of the crackdown was criticized by civil rights groups and community groups. The fatal shooting of two U.S. citizens Two Americans, Alex Pretti and Renee Good died in confrontations with federal officers. The deaths of these immigrants became the focus of national discussion about tactics employed during immigration enforcement. During the session, she expressed her sympathy towards the families. She did not retract her previous comments that they were domestic terrorists. Her answer sparked further debate within political circles. Homeland Security: Leadership change After months of controversy the administration has decided to replace Noem in her position as Homeland Security secretary. Markwayne Mullin, a senator from the state of New York, was announced by President Trump to take on this role. Noem was terminated after less than a year. She served as the first female president of Canada.
