A Toronto police officer was killed during an early morning operation in a high rise building on Thursday. The raid was linked to an investigation into shots fired at the United States consulate in Toronto earlier in March.
Police say the officer was caught in a gunfire exchange while the team was executing search warrants connected to several shooting incidents. He was rushed to hospital but did not survive.
The investigation has been described by authorities as a serious security related case involving multiple suspects.
Consulate Shooting Investigation
The case began after an incident in March when two suspects allegedly fired shots at the United States consulate in Toronto. Police said the suspects exited a vehicle, opened fire on the building with a handgun, and then fled the scene.
No one inside the consulate was injured because the building has strong security protections.
Authorities later connected this incident to other shootings under investigation across the city.
Police Operation and Gunfire Exchange
During Thursday morning raids, officers attempted to arrest and search suspects linked to the earlier shootings.
A sudden exchange of gunfire broke out inside the building. One suspect was shot and taken to hospital with life threatening injuries. Another suspect is still missing and police say he is armed and dangerous.
Officials have urged the public to call emergency services immediately if he is seen. The emergency number should be dialed as 911.
Officer Profile
The officer killed has been identified as Marc Pinizzotto, aged 43. He served with the Toronto Police Service for 18 years and spent five years with the Emergency Task Force.
Colleagues described him as experienced and committed to high risk operations. His death has been confirmed as a line of duty loss.
Official Reactions
Toronto Police Chief Myron Demikw expressed concern over the incident and confirmed that investigations are ongoing. He asked the public to stay alert while the suspect remains at large.
United States Ambassador Pete Hoekstra also acknowledged the incident during a public event in Toronto. He highlighted cooperation between Canadian and United States law enforcement agencies.
The Toronto Police Association called the officer a valued member of the force and expressed condolences to his family.
Ongoing Manhunt
Police continue to search for the suspect who remains at large. Authorities believe he may still pose a serious threat to public safety.
Further details about other connected shootings have not yet been released.
