Former Disney CEO Bob Iger and Josh Kushner, the brother of US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared, are purchasing the majority stake in one of the most recognizable sports clubs in the world. LA Lakers Set for Record $12.5bn Sale to Kushner and Iger In a deal that was unanimously authorized by the NBA Board of Governors in October 2025. Walter purchased his stake from the Buss family for an estimated $10 billion (£7.45 billion), setting a previous record. Kushner and Iger said: “As lifelong NBA fans, we are deeply honored for the opportunity to become stewards of the Los Angeles Lakers, one of the most iconic sports franchises in the world. “We greatly admire the vision and leadership of Jerry and Jeanie Buss. How Mark Walter Became Lakers Owner “Our long-term commitment is to build on that foundation, compete at the highest level, and serve this extraordinary team, its fans, and the city of Los Angeles.” In 1979, Jerry Buss purchased the Lakers for $67.5 million (£50 million), which also included the Los Angeles Kings hockey franchise and the Kia Forum, a Los Angeles arena. Before a contract was finalized with Walter, who also holds a part in the LA Dodgers alongside Todd Boehly, ownership was transferred to his six children in a trust upon his death in 2013. Lakers Have 17 NBA Championships “One of the greatest honors of my life has been owning the Los Angeles Lakers,” Walter remarked. The community, the supporters, and a city that views this team as family are what I will take with me, even if it has been an incredible investment. I appreciate being welcomed into this chapter by Jeanie Buss, the Buss family, the players, and the staff. Los Angeles owns the Lakers, and I’m confident that the greatest is still to come.” The LA Lakers have won 17 NBA titles, one fewer than the Boston Celtics’ record of 18. Kushner’s involvement in the recent scandal regarding Fifa head Gianni Infantino and an abandoned plan before the sale. How the Buss Family Owned the Lakers I am appreciative to Jeanie Buss, the Buss family, the players, and the staff for allowing me to be a part of this chapter. Kushner’s involvement in the recent scandal surrounding Fifa head Gianni Infantino and an abandoned attempt to sell private investors shares in the governing body’s competitions before the agreement. It was anticipated that the planned investor group for the Fifa Forward Enterprise (FFE) initiative would be led by Kushner’s American venture capital firm, Thrive Eternal. US Hotels Fear Weak World Cup Tourism as Bookings Fall Short Tourism expectations fail to match reality US hotels are worried the upcoming World Cup will not deliver the expected tourism boost. Many host cities are reporting lower-than-expected bookings, raising doubts about the event’s economic impact. A report from the American Hotel & Lodging Association shows demand is falling behind forecasts across most locations. The group represents more than 32,000 hotel properties and a large share of franchised hotels in the United States. Conflict between booking data and ticket sales The association says hotel demand does not match FIFA’s claim that over five million tickets have already been sold. It warns that the expected financial gains from the tournament could be lower than projected. Accusations over hotel room block bookings The report also criticizes FIFA for reserving large numbers of hotel rooms in advance. According to the association, this created artificial demand and pushed prices higher in early stages of booking. Later, FIFA cancelled a significant portion of those reservations. Hotel operators say this left gaps in availability and disrupted normal pricing patterns. FIFA has rejected these claims and does not agree with the criticism. Other factors behind weak demand Hotels say several issues are discouraging visitors. High ticket prices for matches are one concern. Expensive local transport and taxes are also adding pressure. Some operators also point to political tensions as another reason international travel interest has slowed. Economic outlook remains uncertain With lower bookings and mixed signals from ticket sales, the hospitality sector is now unsure about the World Cup’s overall economic benefit. Many hotels are preparing for weaker-than-expected revenue during the tournament period.

She met Brian Hickerson, her new lover, just before Nashville's production concluded. Later on, he became aggressive; according to Panettiere, he would smack her head against the wall and once battered her face so severely that she was unable to leave her home for weeks. In her 36 years, she faced more challenges than most, and she tried to deal with them by writing her book, which was released in May. She concluded by assuring readers that she had learned to "walk hand in hand with my triumphs and my tragedies, because they have made me who I am" and that she had come to terms with her past while maintaining optimism for the future.

Why it matters The race will test Trump's influence among South Carolina Republicans.

Trump Backs Darline Graham Senate Bid

Trump will appear at an evening rally at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center. His support comes as Graham faces a closely watched Republican runoff.

Graham entered the race after South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster appointed her to complete the Senate term of her late brother, Lindsey Graham.

The former senator died last month after a heart ailment. He had been a strong supporter of Trump and a prominent voice on U.S. foreign policy.

Darline Graham is now seeking a full six year Senate term in the November congressional elections.

Graham Leads Republican Senate Primary

Graham and Norman were among 10 Republicans who competed in the August 11 primary.

Graham received 32.8% of the vote, while Norman received 24.6%. Neither candidate secured enough support to avoid a runoff.

The winner of the August 25 Republican runoff will face Democrat Annie Andrews in November.

Andrews is a pediatrician. Her campaign had more than $4.1 million in funds at the end of June, according to the information provided.

Republicans remain favored to hold the South Carolina Senate seat. Trump won the state by nearly 18 percentage points in the 2024 presidential election.

Darline Graham Faces Questions Over National Security

Graham faced criticism after a debate with Norman earlier this week.

During the debate, she was asked whether Taiwan and the South China Sea are national security issues for the United States.

Graham responded:

“I’m just going to be honest here. I’m not that informed on national security.”

She then added:

“National security is not my thing.”

Her comments drew criticism from former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, who supports Norman.

“Lindsey Graham was well informed on the United States’ national security. Darline Graham admits she’s not. This is not something you inherit. And it’s critical in the U.S. Senate,” Haley said on X.

Graham later defended her answer during an interview with News.

“I don’t speak politician. I was just honest. And I think that’s kind of a foreign concept,” she said.

She argued that voters in South Carolina are more focused on issues such as the cost of living, transgender issues, gun rights and immigration.

Graham Faces Criticism Over Trump Endorsement

Darline Graham, 62, previously worked in services for people with disabilities. She had no previous political career before McMaster appointed her to the Senate seat.

Ralph Norman, 73, has spent nearly a decade in the U.S. House of Representatives. He previously ran for governor but finished third in the Republican primary in June.

Trump’s endorsement helped Graham lead Norman in the August primary. Still, her failure to win a majority forced the race into a runoff.

Some South Carolina Republicans have criticized Trump’s support for Graham. They argue that the endorsement could look like an effort to place her directly into the Senate seat.

Why Trump’s Support Matters in South Carolina

The South Carolina Senate race offers a test of Trump’s influence inside the Republican Party.

The state remains strongly Republican. That gives the Republican nominee a major advantage in the November election.

At the same time, Graham’s limited political experience and recent debate comments have created new questions about her campaign.

The runoff will show whether Trump’s backing can help Graham overcome those concerns and secure the Republican nomination.

What Happens Next for Darline Graham

Trump will campaign for Graham at the Myrtle Beach rally on August 21.

Graham and Norman will face Republican voters again on August 25.

The winner will advance to the November election against Democrat Annie Andrews. Control of both chambers of Congress will also be at stake during the November midterm elections.

Trump’s support has placed Darline Graham at the center of a closely watched Republican Senate race in South Carolina.

Her runoff against Ralph Norman will show how much influence Trump’s endorsement carries in the state and whether Graham can turn that support into a Republican nomination.
