Former Disney CEO Bob Iger and Josh Kushner, the brother of US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared, are purchasing the majority stake in one of the most recognizable sports clubs in the world. LA Lakers Set for Record $12.5bn Sale to Kushner and Iger In a deal that was unanimously authorized by the NBA Board of Governors in October 2025. Walter purchased his stake from the Buss family for an estimated $10 billion (£7.45 billion), setting a previous record. Kushner and Iger said: “As lifelong NBA fans, we are deeply honored for the opportunity to become stewards of the Los Angeles Lakers, one of the most iconic sports franchises in the world. “We greatly admire the vision and leadership of Jerry and Jeanie Buss. How Mark Walter Became Lakers Owner “Our long-term commitment is to build on that foundation, compete at the highest level, and serve this extraordinary team, its fans, and the city of Los Angeles.” In 1979, Jerry Buss purchased the Lakers for $67.5 million (£50 million), which also included the Los Angeles Kings hockey franchise and the Kia Forum, a Los Angeles arena. Before a contract was finalized with Walter, who also holds a part in the LA Dodgers alongside Todd Boehly, ownership was transferred to his six children in a trust upon his death in 2013. Lakers Have 17 NBA Championships “One of the greatest honors of my life has been owning the Los Angeles Lakers,” Walter remarked. The community, the supporters, and a city that views this team as family are what I will take with me, even if it has been an incredible investment. I appreciate being welcomed into this chapter by Jeanie Buss, the Buss family, the players, and the staff. Los Angeles owns the Lakers, and I’m confident that the greatest is still to come.” The LA Lakers have won 17 NBA titles, one fewer than the Boston Celtics’ record of 18. US Hotels Fear Weak World Cup Tourism as Bookings Fall Short Tourism expectations fail to match reality US hotels are worried the upcoming World Cup will not deliver the expected tourism boost. Many host cities are reporting lower-than-expected bookings, raising doubts about the event’s economic impact. A report from the American Hotel & Lodging Association shows demand is falling behind forecasts across most locations. The group represents more than 32,000 hotel properties and a large share of franchised hotels in the United States. Conflict between booking data and ticket sales The association says hotel demand does not match FIFA’s claim that over five million tickets have already been sold. It warns that the expected financial gains from the tournament could be lower than projected. Accusations over hotel room block bookings The report also criticizes FIFA for reserving large numbers of hotel rooms in advance. According to the association, this created artificial demand and pushed prices higher in early stages of booking. Later, FIFA cancelled a significant portion of those reservations. Hotel operators say this left gaps in availability and disrupted normal pricing patterns. FIFA has rejected these claims and does not agree with the criticism. Other factors behind weak demand Hotels say several issues are discouraging visitors. High ticket prices for matches are one concern. Expensive local transport and taxes are also adding pressure. Some operators also point to political tensions as another reason international travel interest has slowed. Economic outlook remains uncertain With lower bookings and mixed signals from ticket sales, the hospitality sector is now unsure about the World Cup’s overall economic benefit. Many hotels are preparing for weaker-than-expected revenue during the tournament period.

Later on, he became aggressive; according to Panettiere, he would smack her head against the wall and once battered her face so severely that she was unable to leave her home for weeks. In her 36 years, she faced more challenges than most, and she tried to deal with them by writing her book, which was released in May. She concluded by assuring readers that she had learned to "walk hand in hand with my triumphs and my tragedies, because they have made me who I am" and that she had come to terms with her past while maintaining optimism for the future.

Washington IndyCar Race Gains Major Corporate Sponsors

The Freedom 250 Grand Prix is bringing new corporate names into IndyCar sponsorship. Bud Denker, chair of the race and president of Penske Corp, said Boeing, SpaceX’s Starlink and Delta Air Lines are among the new sponsors.

Penske is operating the event, which will cover 250 miles, through parts of central Washington, D.C.

The course includes historic Pennsylvania Avenue and areas near the National Archives and other major cultural institutions.

The event is expected to attract significant political and business attention. Corporate executives and administration officials are expected to attend, with several companies planning corporate suites along the race course.

What We Know About the Freedom 250 Grand Prix

The Freedom 250 Grand Prix is scheduled to take place around Washington, D.C., on Sunday, August 23, 2026. Events connected with the race are taking place across Saturday and Sunday.

Denker said Delta CEO Ed Bastian will attend the race.

Other sponsors include General Motors, Honda, United Airlines, Amazon’s AWS unit, Shell, Gulfstream, Altria, Verizon and Washington Gas.

Many senior executives and members of Congress are also expected to attend, according to sources cited by Reuters.

Trump’s Role in the Washington IndyCar Race

Trump has promoted the Washington IndyCar event. He signed an executive order calling for the race in January.

“I love the race,” Trump said when he signed the order.

Trump is expected to wave the green flag at the start. He is also expected to take a lap around the course in the presidential limousine.

Three sources told Reuters that Trump may invite some company executives to watch the race with him from a special suite.

The White House referred questions about Trump’s plans for the event to Penske.

Why the Washington IndyCar Race Matters

The event is significant for IndyCar because it brings the series directly into the nation’s capital and places the sport in front of major companies that have not traditionally sponsored IndyCar.

Denker said the race gives IndyCar an opportunity to introduce the sport to companies that previously had not been involved.

The large number of corporate sponsors also gives business leaders an opportunity to meet administration officials and lawmakers expected to attend the event.

For Washington, the race is also expected to create major traffic and transportation changes because large areas of downtown will be closed.

Background of the Freedom 250 Grand Prix

The Freedom 250 Grand Prix is part of celebrations surrounding the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence.

The event combines professional motorsport with a major national celebration in Washington, D.C. Its location makes it different from a typical IndyCar event because the course will pass through historic parts of the capital.

Penske is responsible for running the event. The race has also attracted sponsorship from companies across industries including aerospace, airlines, technology, automotive, energy, telecommunications and consumer products.

What Happens Next for the Freedom 250 Grand Prix?

The Freedom 250 Grand Prix will take place on Sunday, August 23, after race-related activities across the weekend. President Donald Trump is expected to attend and wave the green flag at the start of the race.

Major corporate executives, members of Congress and large crowds are also expected to gather in Washington, D.C. City officials will manage significant traffic restrictions as large parts of downtown close for the event.

The race is expected to draw attention beyond motorsport because of Trump’s involvement and the participation of major sponsors such as Boeing, Starlink and Delta Air Lines. The event will also form part of celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence.
