Former Disney CEO Bob Iger and Josh Kushner, the brother of US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared, are purchasing the majority stake in one of the most recognizable sports clubs in the world. LA Lakers Set for Record $12.5bn Sale to Kushner and Iger In a deal that was unanimously authorized by the NBA Board of Governors in October 2025. Walter purchased his stake from the Buss family for an estimated $10 billion (£7.45 billion), setting a previous record. Kushner and Iger said: “As lifelong NBA fans, we are deeply honored for the opportunity to become stewards of the Los Angeles Lakers, one of the most iconic sports franchises in the world. “We greatly admire the vision and leadership of Jerry and Jeanie Buss. How Mark Walter Became Lakers Owner “Our long-term commitment is to build on that foundation, compete at the highest level, and serve this extraordinary team, its fans, and the city of Los Angeles.” In 1979, Jerry Buss purchased the Lakers for $67.5 million (£50 million), which also included the Los Angeles Kings hockey franchise and the Kia Forum, a Los Angeles arena. Before a contract was finalized with Walter, who also holds a part in the LA Dodgers alongside Todd Boehly, ownership was transferred to his six children in a trust upon his death in 2013. Lakers Have 17 NBA Championships “One of the greatest honors of my life has been owning the Los Angeles Lakers,” Walter remarked. The community, the supporters, and a city that views this team as family are what I will take with me, even if it has been an incredible investment. I appreciate being welcomed into this chapter by Jeanie Buss, the Buss family, the players, and the staff. Los Angeles owns the Lakers, and I’m confident that the greatest is still to come.” The LA Lakers have won 17 NBA titles, one fewer than the Boston Celtics’ record of 18. Kushner’s involvement in the recent scandal regarding Fifa head Gianni Infantino and an abandoned plan before the sale. Kushner’s involvement in the recent scandal surrounding Fifa head Gianni Infantino and an abandoned attempt to sell private investors shares in the governing body’s competitions before the agreement. US Hotels Fear Weak World Cup Tourism as Bookings Fall Short Tourism expectations fail to match reality US hotels are worried the upcoming World Cup will not deliver the expected tourism boost. Many host cities are reporting lower-than-expected bookings, raising doubts about the event’s economic impact. A report from the American Hotel & Lodging Association shows demand is falling behind forecasts across most locations. The group represents more than 32,000 hotel properties and a large share of franchised hotels in the United States. Conflict between booking data and ticket sales The association says hotel demand does not match FIFA’s claim that over five million tickets have already been sold. It warns that the expected financial gains from the tournament could be lower than projected. Accusations over hotel room block bookings The report also criticizes FIFA for reserving large numbers of hotel rooms in advance. According to the association, this created artificial demand and pushed prices higher in early stages of booking. Later, FIFA cancelled a significant portion of those reservations. Hotel operators say this left gaps in availability and disrupted normal pricing patterns. FIFA has rejected these claims and does not agree with the criticism. Other factors behind weak demand Hotels say several issues are discouraging visitors. High ticket prices for matches are one concern. Expensive local transport and taxes are also adding pressure. Some operators also point to political tensions as another reason international travel interest has slowed. Economic outlook remains uncertain With lower bookings and mixed signals from ticket sales, the hospitality sector is now unsure about the World Cup’s overall economic benefit. Many hotels are preparing for weaker-than-expected revenue during the tournament period.

Later on, he became aggressive; according to Panettiere, he would smack her head against the wall and once battered her face so severely that she was unable to leave her home for weeks. In her 36 years, she faced more challenges than most, and she tried to deal with them by writing her book, which was released in May. She concluded by assuring readers that she had learned to "walk hand in hand with my triumphs and my tragedies, because they have made me who I am" and that she had come to terms with her past while maintaining optimism for the future.

The US Treasury Department is expected to expand secondary sanctions against companies and countries that continue doing business with Iran, according to a person familiar with the plans. The move would widen Washington’s economic pressure on Tehran and could affect businesses outside Iran.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is expected to provide more details at a press conference on Monday. The planned measures are part of a wider US campaign aimed at cutting Iran’s access to international finance and putting pressure on countries that continue economic ties with Tehran.

US Expands Iran Sanctions

The Treasury Department plans to broaden the activities that can trigger secondary sanctions linked to Iran. These sanctions can target foreign companies, banks and other entities that conduct certain business with sanctioned Iranian interests.

A person familiar with the plans said Washington wants to send a clear warning to countries that continue economic ties with Tehran. The person spoke anonymously because they were not authorized to discuss the plans publicly.

The planned measures could cover additional types of Iran related activity. Some activities carried out in third countries could also face sanctions, although the Treasury has not publicly identified every category.

The United States has used sanctions against Iran for decades. Previous measures have targeted oil revenues, aviation, military procurement, cryptocurrency activity and businesses linked to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

What Bessent Is Expected to Announce

Bessent was scheduled to discuss the Iran measures during a press conference at 1 p.m. EDT on August 24. The information provided in the Reuters report describes the announcement as expected, so the final details should be checked against the Treasury’s official statement.

Bessent has described the wider economic campaign as an “economic D Day.” He has also called the planned measures the “toughest sanctions in history.”

The Treasury is expected to warn banks and other financial institutions that continued support for Iran could put their access to the US financial system at risk.

US Targets Iran’s Financial Network

US sanctions already place major restrictions on Iran’s access to the dollar based financial system. Iranian networks have also used front companies, alternative shipping arrangements and other methods to avoid sanctions.

The Treasury says it has continued targeting networks connected to Iranian oil sales and sanctions evasion. Recent US actions have included sanctions against companies, individuals and vessels involved in Iranian oil and financial networks.

The new measures could make it easier for Washington to target foreign entities that help Iranian businesses move money or conduct restricted transactions.

The exact list of newly covered activities was not provided in the Reuters report. This point needs verification after the Treasury releases its formal announcement.

Impact on China

China is one of the countries that could face greater pressure from the expanded sanctions.

The United States has already sanctioned Chinese independent refineries involved in buying Iranian oil. Washington has also targeted vessels linked to the transport of Iranian crude.

The more serious step would involve sanctions against banks in China or other countries that help process transactions involving Iran. Such action could create tension between Washington and Beijing.

The timing is also important because Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are expected to meet in Washington in late September. New measures against Chinese financial institutions could add pressure to the wider US China economic relationship.

China has already said it will monitor the situation and protect its interests. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian called for restraint and said pressure and sanctions would not help resolve international disputes

Trump Tightens Economic Pressure on Iran

The Trump administration has increased economic pressure on Iran as the conflict between Washington and Tehran approaches the six month mark.

The fighting has disrupted energy shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, a major route for global oil and other energy supplies. The disruption has contributed to higher energy prices and increased pressure on international markets.

Iran has rejected the US pressure. Iranian officials have argued that sanctions will not force Tehran to accept Washington’s demands

US Sanctions Put China Under Pressure

Secondary sanctions can affect companies outside the United States. A foreign bank or company may face restrictions if it conducts transactions that Washington considers sanctionable.

That creates a difficult choice for businesses. They may have to decide whether continuing business with Iran is worth the risk of losing access to the US financial system.

The impact could be especially important for countries that maintain trade relationships with Iran. China is a major focus because of its role in Iranian oil purchases and regional trade.

Treasury to Reveal New Iran Sanctions

The next important step is the US Treasury announcement. Officials are expected to explain which activities and entities could face secondary sanctions.

The response from China, Iran and other countries will also matter. Businesses and banks will likely examine the new rules closely before deciding whether to continue transactions involving Iran.

The exact scope of the new sanctions should be treated as unconfirmed until the US Treasury publishes the formal measures
