Today, the newly appointed prime minister visited Scotland and had meetings with First Minister John Swinney and Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar.
After meeting with Mr. Swinney, Sir Keir addressed reporters and played down the possibility of commencing talks on independence.
In the election held last week, the SNP lost a resounding majority of its seats.
Using the occasion to “reset relations” with the first and deputy first ministers, Sir Keir continued.
Although he acknowledged that they were “clearly differences of opinion” over fundamental issues, the meeting was still.
Mr. Swinney restated his assertion that the loss of 39 of his party’s 48 seats did not mean that their mandate for independence was no longer valid.
He did, however, clarify that the party’s priority will be achieving economic growth, addressing child poverty, public services, and net zero emissions rather than independence.
Later on Sunday, Sir Keir left for Northern Ireland, where he would meet on Monday with the opposition leaders, first minister, and deputy first minister.
