President Asif Ali Zardari stated on Thursday that the meeting between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur was a “good beginning”.
Shehbaz’s government took power this month after his Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) forged a coalition with Zardari’s Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and other smaller parties.
In opposition, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), which has formed a government in the KP province, argues that the PML-N and PPP won the February 8 elections by “stealing” the PTI mandate.
The relationship between these parties has been difficult for years, with Gandapur, after being elected as chief minister, stating that while he does not accept the PML-N government, he will maintain a working relationship with the Centre. As part of this, he met with Prime Minister Shehbaz in Islamabad on Wednesday, hailing his first meeting with the PML-N’s chief executive as “positive”.
