French Student Fined for Licking Straw
Studying in Singapore, Maximilien shared a video of himself sucking a straw on Instagram, captioning it “city is not safe.”
His video was published on a community website and picked up by local news agencies, to the chagrin of many on the internet.
Following Maximilien’s antics, the firm that owns the vending machine, iJooz, claimed to have replaced all 500 straws in the machine dispenser.
In Singapore, public nuisance offenders may be fined S$2,000, imprisoned for three months, or both.
Maximilien was pursued for a fine by both the prosecution and the defense.
The Straits Times said that Maximilien is “truly sorry for having caused all this trouble, and he realizes that what appeared to him at that time.
Something perhaps playful has turned out to be something very consequential,” according to a defense attorney.
iJooz vending machines, which sell freshly squeezed orange juice for S$2 a cup, are frequently seen in Singapore’s retail areas.
