In opposition to former public health official Abdul El-Sayed, who has been channeling popular dissatisfaction with Washington politics. Moderate four-term congresswoman Haley Stevens is positioning herself as the safe choice.

Before the midterm elections in November, the results of Tuesday’s much-anticipated vote might influence the party’s course well beyond Michigan.

If Democrats wish to seize control of the upper house of Congress and attempt to derail Trump’s agenda, they virtually have to win the vacant Senate seat.

The Democrat presently holding the position is retiring. This Midwestern state last elected a Republican senator in 1994.

Michigan Democrats Face High Stakes Primary

Michigan is one of the key swing states in presidential elections; in 2020, it supported Democrat Joe Biden, but in 2024, it supported Trump.

In the midterm elections on November 3, the winner of the primary will face Trump loyalist Mike Rogers.

If elected, El-Sayed, a 41-year-old son of Egyptian immigrants, would become the first Muslim senator in US history.

Leading left-wing politicians like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York City and Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont have backed him.

El Sayed Campaign Focuses on Healthcare

Leading left-wing politicians like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York City and Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont have backed him.

El-Sayed has run on platforms that include eliminating US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), taxing billionaires, and Medicare for All.

Healthcare expenditures, along with the growing prices of housing, groceries, and gasoline, continue to rank among the top concerns for voters this year, according to polling from the previous year.

Les Lukacs, a voter from Michigan, is supporting El-Sayed because of his affordability agenda, which includes his emphasis on health insurance.

The longtime Democrat, who has health insurance, said that if El-Sayed lost the primary, he would not support Stevens in November.

El Sayed Rejects Socialist Label

El-Sayed dismisses the socialist label as ineffective and does not belong to the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) faction of the party.

However, he continues to learn from his democratic socialist party colleagues, particularly New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Whose social media skills and emphasis on affordability helped push him to victory in New York last year.

The left-wing Democrats have won a number of primaries this summer, particularly in Colorado. It is unclear if they will be able to win back the disenchanted working-class voters who supported Trump in 2024.

Haley Stevens Courts Moderate Voters

The leaders of the party believe that Stevens’ more practical, moderate Democratic agenda would win over undecided voters.

Colleen Houlihan, a 74-year-old Ferndale, Michigan resident who is probably going to vote for Stevens. They told the press that now might not be the right time for progressives.

I want the nation to undergo significant change, but we must start with this government, and in order to return power to responsible hands, the candidate must be electable.”

Stevens, 43, has positioned herself as the contender with more electability and experience.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan and departing Senator Gary Peters have both endorsed her.

Israel Gaza Debate Shapes Michigan Primary

A split about Israel
El-Sayed has also criticized US assistance to Israel and other US actions in the Middle East.

According to recent surveys, a significant percentage of Americans believe that, in the wake of the Iran War. The US is overly supportive of its longstanding friend, Israel.

The second-largest Arab-American community in the United States is in Michigan.

Israel disputes El-Sayed’s claim that its actions in Gaza constitute a genocide.

He has been eager to point to his opponent’s affiliation with AIPAC, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, which has invested about $30 million to support Stevens.

Israel Gaza War Divides Democrats

Stevens is staunchly pro-Israel and has stated that she is in favor of maintaining unconditional US funding to Israel, much like many other moderate Democrats.

In Israeli interview, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu chastised her for her criticism.

Auburn Hills, Michigan, sheriff’s deputy Cedric Erkins, who has not yet cast his ballot, is upset that the US “can afford to send billions overseas” despite growing domestic expenses.

The Israel-Gaza conflict continues to pose a problem for Democrats, even if the party has mostly united against Trump’s war in Iran.

According to Larry Sabato, director of the University of Virginia Center for Politics, they have traditionally relied on votes from both the Jewish and Arab populations to win elections.
