In Texas, officials are examining how much water large data centers use. In Brazil, residents are raising concerns about a major artificial intelligence data center planned in a water stressed area. At the same time, extreme weather is disrupting education for millions of children worldwide.

Texas electricity demand New large scale customers have requested about 474 gigawatts of electricity capacity.
Brazil data center A planned 1 gigawatt facility in Paracatu has raised concerns over water and energy demand.
Why it matters Growing technology demand and extreme weather are putting additional pressure on water resources.

Texas Examines Data Center Water Use

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has directed the Texas Water Development Board to take action against data center developers that fail to report their water use accurately.

The governor said Texas law requires companies to provide complete water use information. He also directed the state water board to address previous reporting failures.

The move comes as Texas faces a sharp rise in demand for electricity from large new facilities.

State officials have also paused new data center connections to the electricity grid while agencies examine future power and water needs.

Texas Faces Growing Water Pressure

Texas already faces concerns about future water supplies.

Earlier reporting from the Texas Tribune highlighted rising demand and extreme weather across the state. One estimate suggests that municipal water supplies could fall short by 2030 during a severe drought if the state does not add new water solutions.

That pressure makes water use by large industrial and technology facilities an important issue for state planners.

Extreme Weather Disrupts Education

The global water and climate story also affects children.

A UNICEF report says 171 million students experienced education disruptions during 2025 because of storms, flooding, and heatwaves.

Some children faced more than one type of extreme weather event.

August recorded the highest level of disruption, according to the report. UNICEF also found that children in tropical cyclone areas can face long term effects on education.

About 75 percent of affected students lived in low income or lower middle income countries.

UNICEF estimates that education disruptions linked to school closures could contribute to about $200 billion in future earnings losses.

Climate Pressure Adds to Water Concerns

The United States has also experienced major climate pressure.

The information provided says NOAA confirmed that summer 2026 was the hottest summer on record for the contiguous United States.

The development came shortly before the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced the repeal of federal rules covering greenhouse gas emissions from coal and natural gas power plants.

Brazil Data Center Raises Water Questions

A major data center project in Paracatu, Brazil, has also raised concerns.

Mongabay reported that the planned facility could use about 1 gigawatt of electricity. That would make it larger than the combined electricity use of other data centers in Brazil, according to the report.

Paracatu has around 100,000 residents and has experienced water stress for years.

Groundwater supplies also face pressure. In 35 of 39 areas where officials have heavily restricted groundwater use, demand reportedly exceeds available reserves.

Key Facts About the Global Water Crisis

• Texas is increasing scrutiny of water use by data centers.

• Texas officials are reviewing future electricity and water needs linked to new facilities.

• UNICEF reported education disruptions affecting 171 million students during 2025.

• Low income and lower middle income countries experienced most of the reported education disruption.

• Extreme heat has added pressure to water supplies in parts of the United States.

• A large data center project in Paracatu has raised concerns about water and energy demand.

AI Growth Puts Pressure on Water Resources

The growth of artificial intelligence has increased demand for large data centers.

These facilities require substantial electricity. Some also require significant amounts of water for cooling systems.

This creates a difficult challenge for governments and communities. They must balance economic development and technology investment with the need to protect limited water resources.

Water Pressure Shapes the Future

The latest developments show how water pressure is spreading across different parts of society.

From Texas data centers to Brazilian communities and children affected by extreme weather, water availability is becoming an increasingly important issue for governments and local communities.

Understanding how technology growth, climate conditions, and water demand interact will remain important as countries plan for the years ahead.
