ISLAMABAD The 16th appeal against the controversial amendment was submitted on Saturday by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), which argued that the 26th Amendment went beyond the bounds of the Constitution.
In October of last year, the parliament adopted amendments to the Constitution that included establishing constitutional benches, allowing the legislature to choose the chief justice, and determining the tenure of the top position.
During an extraordinary session of parliament that convened on Sunday, a public holiday, and lasted all night until just before dawn, the constitutional amendments were passed.
Following the action, the PTI and other opposition parties claimed it was an attempt to undermine the judiciary. The PTI did not cast a vote during the session when the amendment was enacted.
