Federal prosecutors have been instructed by the US Justice Department to withdraw their corruption prosecution against Eric Adams, the mayor of New York City.
The indictment “restricted” the mayor’s capacity to deal with “illegal immigration and violent crime” in the city, according to the acting deputy attorney general, who was nominated by President Donald Trump and issued the order.
Recently, Adams, a Democrat, has gotten closer to Trump, a Republican, and has instructed law police to assist the president in his immigration raids. However, he denies discussing his issue with Trump.
The mayor is charged with taking gifts and unlawful campaign money in return for his power as mayor. On five allegations, he entered a not guilty plea.
To date, prosecutors have not made any statements indicating whether they plan to drop
