Washington: The administration of US President Donald Trump on Friday proposed a $163 billion cut to the federal budget, which would increase spending on border security and defense while drastically cutting funding in sectors like housing and education the following year.
According to the administration, the proposed budget will increase homeland security spending by almost 65% over the levels that were authorized in 2025.
According to a statement from the White House Office of Management and Budget, non-defense discretionary spending, which is a portion of the budget that does not include the enormous Social Security and Medicare programs or the growing interest payments on the country’s debt, would be slashed by 23% to its lowest level since 2017.
More than $2 billion would be cut from the Internal Revenue Service, which collects taxes, as part of the proposed budget.
