TEHRAN: Amid stark disagreements over whether Tehran may continue to enrich uranium, Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, declared Wednesday that a US nuclear agreement plan was against the country’s interests.
In order to replace the agreement with major powers that US President Donald Trump renounced during his first term in 2018, the old adversaries have been engaged in five rounds of negotiations since April.
Iran said on Saturday that it had obtained “elements” of the US plan through Omani intermediaries; however, the specifics have not been made public.
Khamenei stated in a televised speech that “the (nuclear) proposal presented by the Americans is 100% against” the principles of the Islamic revolution of 1979.
