KUALA LUMPUR: In a lengthy case involving a former unit of scandal-tainted state fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), Malaysia’s High Court has discharged but not acquitted jailed former Prime Minister Najib Razak of money laundering allegations, according to his attorney on Friday.
After being convicted of corruption and money laundering in connection with the misappropriation of funds from SRC International, a former 1MDB company, from which Malaysian and US investigators claim around $4.5 billion was taken in a convoluted, international operation, Najib has been incarcerated since August 2022.
In addition, he was accused of embezzling 27 million ringgit ($6.4 million) from SRC in three other money laundering cases.
The Kuala Lumpur High Court granted Najib’s request after the case had been continuously blocked since 2019 because of procedural delays.
