Mahmoud Khalil, an activist and Columbia University graduate, was ordered to be released on bail by a federal judge more than three months after his arrest.
When Mr. Khalil was arrested by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in New York on March 8, he became a symbol of the Trump administration’s crackdown on international students and colleges.
Last year, Mr. Khalil was a well-known speaker at Columbia’s pro-Palestinian demonstrations, and his detention provoked protests in New York and Washington, DC.
According to the press, US District Judge Michael Farbiarz decided that Mr. Khalil may be freed while immigration procedures were ongoing since he posed no harm to his community or flight risk.
