WASHINGTON: A proposal to restrict President Donald Trump’s authority to take more military action against Iran was turned down by the Republican-controlled US Senate.
The Democratic-led plan would have required Trump to wait for congressional approval before launching any new military action. However, the Senate rejected it, largely along party lines, maintaining his war powers.
Trump announced he might contemplate further airstrikes only hours before the Democratic bid.
A war powers resolution that would have required congressional consent for any additional hostilities with Iran was rejected by the Senate by a vote of 53 to 47. With the exception of Kentucky Republican Rand Paul and Pennsylvania Democrat John Fetterman, who voted with the Democrats, the vote largely followed party lines.
