A strike by customs officials stopped shipments on Sunday, halting operations at the largest port in Bangladesh.
Employees of the tax authority and the government, which is working to restructure the organization, are at odds over the Chittagong Port shutdown.
Every day, the port normally handles between 7,000 and 8,000 containers. However, there hasn’t been any progress on the offloading or onboarding of products since this morning,” stated Mohammed Omar Faruq, the Chittagong Port Authority secretary.
“This is having a huge impact on the country’s economic situation,” he stated to AFP.
About 80% of Bangladesh’s exports are textile and apparel products, making it the second-largest garment maker in the world.
