Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, the chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), voiced serious concerns about recent rulings against the opposition leaders in the May 9 cases rendered by the anti-terrorism courts (ATCs), referring to them as a “threat to democracy”.
His response followed the sentencing of a number of PTI leaders, including opposition senators and members of the National Assembly, Omar Ayub and Shibli Faraz, as well as parliamentary leader Zartaj Gul and others, to ten years in prison each by a special anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Faisalabad. The case was filed in the wake of the May 9, 2023, violence at the Civil Lines Police Station.
Gohar criticized the ongoing trials of cases relating to the May 9 riots in an interview with journalists in Islamabad.
