Nigeria’s emergency agency reported on Sunday that rescuers are looking for around 40 persons following a boat disaster in the northwest state of Sokoto.
The boat capsized on Sunday morning while transporting over fifty people to a market, according to a statement from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).
“About 10 persons have been rescued, while more than 40 passengers remain missing,” stated NEMA.
Because of congestion and poor maintenance, boat accidents are prevalent on Nigeria’s poorly regulated waterways, especially during the annual rainy season when rivers and lakes overflow.
