Kwasi Kwarteng was first elected to the legislature in 2010 and has been employed by the government since 2015 in a variety of capacities. He served as Liz Truss’s chancellor for 38 days until being fired as a result of the mini-budget controversy.
In an attempt to calm markets, then-prime minister Liz Truss fired Mr. Kwarteng after he presented the dismal mini-budget and replaced him with Jeremy Hunt.
Mr. Kwarteng is the member of parliament for Spelthorne in Surrey, having a majority of 18,393.
“Yesterday I informed my association chair of my decision not to stand at the next general election,” Mr. Kwarteng wrote on social media.
“It has been an honour to serve the residents of Spelthorne since 2010, and I shall continue to do so for the remainder of my time in parliament.”
He is the 55th Conservative MP to declare he will not run in the next election, according to a count by Sky News.
Shortly before Ms. Truss introduced her new “Popular Conservatives” movement, the announcement was made.
Since 2015, Mr. Kwarteng has served in a number of Conservative administrations as a business and Brexit minister. In January 2021, Boris Johnson elevated Mr. Kwarteng to the position of business secretary in the cabinet.
Close ally of Ms. Truss, he enthusiastically backed her bid to head the Tory Party and the nation, and on September 6, 2022, she named him chancellor.
38 days later, on October 14, 2022, he was fired.
