Shehbaz Sharif, President of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), has been elected as the country’s prime minister for the second time in a row after receiving 201 votes in the National Assembly, despite a protest by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-backed Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) legislators.

In his 1 hour and 25-minute victory address, PM-elect Shehbaz discussed critical concerns facing the country and reiterated his desire to lead the nation to progress and prosperity, as is customary in parliament.

Aside from that, the newly-elected premier advocated for lowering the country’s political temperature and opening the door to political debate.

Here are the important takeaways from the PM-elect’s speech:
“I have no personal egos and the other side also needs to follow suit for the sake of Pakistan,” he said.
Shehbaz urges opponents to take their complaints about alleged election tampering to relevant channels.
Shehbaz voices worry about mounting debt, claiming the country is due to Rs80,000 billion in internal and external debts.
The Prime Minister-elect expects revenue of twelve thousand and three hundred billion rupees for the current fiscal year.
Shehbaz promises that his government will make every effort to lower inflation and generate jobs.
The premier said CPEC will move forward with the help of China, a “time-tested” and dependable friend of Pakistan. He expresses determination to eliminate terrorism from the country.
Shehbaz believes that gaining allies and “reducing opponents” will be a key component of foreign strategy.
The Prime Minister said his government will make attempts to mend and rebuild relations with Washington, and relations with surrounding countries will be pursued on the basis of equality.
He also opposes Israeli assault against innocent Palestinians and Indian atrocities in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).
