KARACHI: Defence Minister Khawaja Asif stated on Wednesday that former army chief General (retd) Qamar Javed Bajwa threatened him with a news conference, to which “I said do it.”
The top cabinet member of the nascent Shehbaz Sharif government made the revelation while speaking with Shahzeb Khanzada on Geo News.
When the anchor questioned if he had previously been threatened by the former army head, Asif acknowledged it.
“Yes, he threatened me earlier as well and told me that he [Bajwa] would hold a press conference against me to which I said do it.”
The topic came under debate while the minister was presenting his opinion on his demand to call ex-army chief and spymaster Faiz Hamid to the National Assembly.
At this moment, the anchor added that the PTI had also condemned the threat made against the defence minister.
Asif said that he did not offend anyone by summoning the ex-generals for a briefing on the previous government’s policies.
“About two or three years ago, we were told that allowing the Taliban to return to Pakistan would usher in a new period of peace and brotherhood. We were offered a rosy picture, yet look what’s going on in the country.”
