A third of women in the music industry reportedly experienced sexual harassment at work, and many of them said it hindered their ability to advance in their careers.
In addition, women are eight times more likely than men to experience prejudice.
The Musicians’ Union and Help Musicians conducted the first-ever UK Musicians’ Census, which yielded these results.
2,526 out of the over 6,000 music business professionals surveyed in the study identified as women.
According to the survey, women generally have shorter careers and receive lower pay than men, despite having more education and training.
Compared to 20% of male musicians, more over a quarter (27%) of female musicians claimed they did not make enough money from music to support a career.
Women make 10% less money than men do on average, with an average yearly salary of £19,850 vs £21,750 for men.
