Maxwell, 35, requested to be excluded from Monday’s 25-run loss against Sunrisers Hyderabad after only scoring 32 runs in the Royal Challengers Bengaluru team’s first six games.
In 2019, he also took a hiatus to safeguard his emotional well-being.
“It was a fairly simple decision for me,” Maxwell remarked.
“After the last game, I went to the coaches and [captain] Faf du Plessis and said I thought it was probably time we tried someone new.
“I have been in this situation in the past where you can keep playing and get yourself deeper into a hole.”
