The Parole Board stated that it has authorized an application for an open hearing in July in the “interests of justice”.

Such hearings are typically held in private; however, they may be held in public in certain circumstances following a change in the legislation.

“I have carefully considered Mr. Pitchfork’s representations and have concluded that the interests of justice outweigh the points raised on his behalf,” said Caroline Corby, head of the Parole Board.

In 1988, Pitchfork was sentenced to at least 30 years in prison, which was later reduced to 28 years, for raping and strangling 15-year-olds Lynda Mann and Dawn Ashworth in Leicester.
