South Africa’s top court has prevented former President Jacob Zuma from running for parliament in next week’s general election.
The Constitutional Court determined that his 15-month prison sentence for contempt of court disqualified him.
Mr Zuma was found guilty in 2021 for refusing to appear in an inquiry into corruption during his presidency, which ended in 2018.
He is competing under the banner of the newly founded uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party after a falling out with the ruling African National Congress (ANC).
MK secretary general Sihle Ngubane stated that while the party was upset with the judgment, it would not hinder its campaign.
“He continues to lead the party. “It [the judgment] has no effect on our campaign,” he remarked.
