The former world number one was down 7-5, 4-1 in Switzerland when rain began to fall and gusts of wind swept white pollen onto the court.
“It’s like it’s snowing out here and you still want us to keep playing,” Murray argued with umpire Greg Allensworth before the players were told to retreat to the locker room.
Murray’s match was rescheduled until Tuesday, but not before 12:00 BST.
The match between fellow Briton Jack Draper and Czech Tomas Machac has also been postponed to Tuesday.
Murray was playing in his first ATP Tour match since rupturing ankle ligaments at the Miami Open in March.
Unless he can stage a miraculous recovery against Germany’s Hanfmann, the Scot will lose out on the chance to face world number one Novak Djokovic in the second round.
