The 24-year-old Mali international covered the campaign logo on his chest with white tape on May 19, during the team’s 4-0 victory against Nantes in Ligue 1.
After hearing from Camara, the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) announced in a statement that the player’s unwillingness “to carry out one or more actions to raise awareness of the fight against homophobia” was taken into consideration when deciding to impose the penalty.
Amelie Oudea-Castera, France’s minister of sports, stated on French radio station RTL last week that Camara ought to face “the strongest sanctions.”
On the last day of the campaign, all Ligue 1 teams wore the campaign emblem on their uniforms.
The LFP, which oversees the top two divisions of French football, launched the effort that resulted in team shirts bearing the competition’s insignia in rainbow colors.
Camara had also covered up the rainbow insignia.
In a statement defending Camara, the Malian Football Federation stated that “players are citizens like any other, whose fundamental rights must be protected in all circumstances.”
Monaco’s chief executive, Thiago Scuro, informed French media that the team supports the LFP’s campaign and that they will speak “internally” with Camara about the matter.
