Ms. Shaheen’s candidacy for Chingford and Woodford Green was withdrawn due to her purported liking of a sequence of social media posts that played down allegations of antisemitism.
She claimed she had been “penalised for describing my experiences of Islamophobia” in a statement on X.
“Today, with a heavy heart, I have made a decision to resign from the Labour Party.”
Labour was accused by Ms. Shaheen of carrying out a “sham process initiated for spurious reasons” to eliminate her from consideration for the northeast London seat.
She finished second against Tory heavyweight Sir Iain Duncan in the most recent election in 2019.
Smith, falling short of him by a mere thousand votes.
The party’s ruling National Executive Committee, however, said on Tuesday that they would not be supporting the economist and author this time around. Instead, Brent councillor Shama Tatler was selected.
According to Ms. Shaheen, she has encountered “a relentless campaign of unfair treatment, bullying, and hostility that I have never encountered in any of my previous experiences, whether personal or professional.”
