This week, however, the Australian canoeist will attempt to pull off an unparalleled treble at Paris 2024. She has now won her last three Olympic finals and changed the course of the Games.
The 30-year-old French native, Fox, has shone in the canoe slalom since her comeback, outperforming her competitors at the magnificent Vaires-sur-Marne Nautical Stadium.
She easily won the canoe single (C1) title on Wednesday, finishing 2.48 seconds ahead of Germany’s flawless Elena Lilik, even after she was given two penalty seconds for colliding with a gate.
It was only three days after her victory in the kayak single (K1), which put an end to her excruciatingly long wait for gold in that particular event.
Fox lost out on gold in her first three Olympic finals by a total of six seconds in a sport where the smallest margins determine victory.
She is the first athlete to win two gold medals in the canoe slalom at the same Games, though, and she has created history in Paris. In the sport, her sixth Olympic podium stands unrivaled.
With her sixth individual medal, Fox has surpassed renowned athletes such as swimmers Ian Thorpe and Leisel Jones, cyclist Anna Meares, and runner Shirley Strickland to become the most successful athlete in Australian Olympic history.
