The US-sponsored resolution, which calls for an immediate end to the Houthi attacks on ships in the Red Sea, is scheduled for discussion by the UN council today. The proposed resolution demanded that all arms transfers with the group backed by Iran be denounced and stated that the attacks “undermine navigational rights and freedoms as well as regional peace and security.” Since taking control of the Japanese-operated cargo ship Galaxy Liner on November 19, the Houthis have launched 26 strikes in the Red Sea, claiming that they were acting in reprisal for Israel’s invasion of Gaza. To stop the attacks on the crucial international shipping route, the US assembled a coalition of 12 nations last month.
