The drugs were taken into custody when a 29-year-old man was discovered on Friday at the Otay Mesa Commercial Facility in San Diego with the consignment in his tractor-trailer. The man claimed to be carrying boxes of watermelons from Mexico over the border with officials.
Nevertheless, the officers made the decision to take the driver, the car, and its contents to a secondary inspection location for more scrutiny.
1,220 items “wrapped in paper, disguised as watermelons” were discovered within the cargo, according to the agency.
After testing, the packages’ contents were found to contain methamphetamines, weighing a total of it.
According to the agency, their estimated street value is more than £5 million (£3.8 million). After seizing the drugs and the tractor-trailer, agents gave the driver over to the agency responsible for Homeland Security Investigations.
Rosa E. Hernandez, port director for the Otay Mesa region port, remarked, “I am extremely proud of our team for their exceptional work over the past few weeks in uncovering sophisticated and diverse smuggling methods.”
“We will never stop coming up with new and improved ways to stop these dangerous drugs and other contraband from entering the country, even as drug cartels continue to innovate their smuggling methods.”
