Murdo Fraser, who had previously opposed same-sex adoption, told News that he is now “quite relaxed” about it.
The Scottish MSP Mr. Fraser went on to say that one’s personal religious convictions “should not be a barrier to standing for office”.
In 2014, the Scottish parliament passed a law allowing gay couples to be married.
Mr. Fraser was one of the eighteen MSPs who opposed it at the time, claiming that it may jeopardize the charitable standing of providers and faith-based organizations that do not support same-sex marriage.
In a 2006 debate on the subject, Mr. Fraser stated that “children need male and female role models” and that “people who express such views are not homophobes, extremists, or, as some suggest,’religious nutters.'” He was also against same-sex couples being able to adopt.
In response to criticism that he is “stuck in the past” from certain other MSPs, he stated: “Most people are understanding that politicians are entitled to have personal religious views and that that should not be a barrier to them standing for office.”
Speaking following the launch of his campaign to unseat Douglas Ross as the leader of the Scottish Conservatives, Mr. Fraser mentioned Russell Findlay and Meghan Gallacher as potential contenders.
