ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari signed the “Peaceful Assembly and Public Order Bill, 2024,” which sought to control public meetings, into law just one day prior to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) much-anticipated demonstration in the nation’s capital.
The Senate and the National Assembly (NA) passed the legislation two days ago, despite strong objections from PTI legislators in the opposition.
According to the new draft, anyone found in a “unlawful assembly” might face up to three years in prison or an undefined fine. The district magistrate would also have the authority to control and prohibit public gatherings in the nation’s capital.
It also suggested that repeat offenders face a sentence that may last up to ten years in prison.
