With ten games left, the Yankees, who lead the Baltimore Orioles by five games in the AL East and presently have the best record in the American League (89-63), will at least secure a wild card berth with this victory.
This accomplishment is all the more sweeter for the squad because they missed the playoffs the previous season, ending a six-year run of postseason participation. “We weren’t a great team last year, and this team has a chance to do something special,” manager Aaron Boone said in reference to the squad’s turnaround, attributing it to improved health and refocused determination.
