The superstar of the Los Angeles Dodgers needed two home runs and one stolen base to complete the record. In a 20-4 victory over the Miami Marlins, he finished the evening with 51 home runs and 51 thefts.
Ohtani hit the first part of the record in the first inning by stealing third base.
Then, in the sixth inning, he hit his 49th home run of the season, tying the Dodgers record for most home runs in a season set by Shawn Green in 2001. He had also recorded his 51st steal of the season.
Ohtani then became the first player to record a 50-50 feat by hitting 50 home runs in the following inning.
“To be honest, I’m the one probably most surprised,” remarked Ohtani.
“I have no idea where this came from, but I’m glad that I performed well today.”
In December, the 30-year-old Japanese player signed the largest contract in sports history, a 10-year $700 million (£527 million) contract with the Dodgers, making him one of the most paid sportsmen in the world.
Following the Dodgers’ 12th consecutive postseason appearance, Ohtani has participated in 866 MLB games, which is the most of any active player who has not yet been in the postseason.
