MUMBAI: For inhabitants like Bipinkumar Padaya, the red mark in Mumbai’s Dharavi slum, which is stenciled just above the steps, is equivalent to an eviction notice.
“I was born here, my father was born here, and my grandfather was born here,” the 58-year-old government worker murmured.
“But we don’t have any choice, we have to vacate.”
Bulldozers are anticipated to soon rumble into the largest slum in Asia, located in the center of Mumbai, India, leveling its maze of dirty lanes to create a brand-new neighborhood.
The rebuilding plan, spearheaded by Mumbai officials and billionaire Gautam Adani, is a reflection of the harsh, ambitious, and extravagant nature of contemporary India.
