Gold hits record highs amid political tensions The gold price soared to $5,500 per ounce on Monday for the very first time, before briefly falling back. Silver prices also rose, with an ounce trading for around $98. This is up from $38 a year earlier. As global uncertainties continue, investors are turning to precious metals for a haven. Investors are wary of Trump's policies US President Donald Trump’s trade policies are causing market uncertainty. The uncertainty caused by his tariffs against multiple countries, and the threats he made over Greenland has pushed investors towards gold. Gold is seen as safer than the risks associated with US fiscal and foreign policy, say analysts. Emma Wall, Chief Investment Strategist at Hargreaves Lansdown says that gold jumps whenever the world is chaotic. Precious metals have become more appealing due to the ongoing tensions in Europe, China and the Middle East as well as US political instability. Demand for Geopolitical Conflicts Increases Gold prices have risen due to the wars in Ukraine, Gaza and Venezuela. The geopolitical developments eroded investor confidence in the US Dollar, leading them to look for security in metals. Bloomberg's chart shows that gold and silver are up by 80%, respectively 214% since a year earlier. The US dollar index is down 10%. Central Banks and New Buyers Help the Rally Gold is being bought by central banks to decrease their dependence on the US Dollar. Gold is a safe haven for nations who are worried about their US dollars being frozen. China is the top buyer, both by investors and individual buyers. Tether and other digital currency companies have purchased large amounts of reserves to add to the trend. What is the Reason for Gold Price Drop? Gold prices fell below $5,000 despite record highs after President Trump announced that Kevin Warsh would be nominated as Fed Chairman. Warsh's nomination is seen as a safe choice that will ease concerns over interest rate reductions and the dollar. Gold remains attractive to analysts due to geopolitical risk, tariffs and scarcity. Nicholas Frappell, of ABC Refinery, emphasizes the fact that gold's value is independent of debts and company performance. What to Take Away Gold's volatility in recent years shows its sensitivity to economic and political developments. Gold is still a safe investment, even though prices fluctuate.

A clash of styles is expected in the Australian Open final between world number Aryna Sablalenka and fifth seed Elena Rybakina. The two players have explosive power, and both are able to serve with deadly accuracy. However, their styles could not be any more different. The case of Sabalenka Sabalenka is a hard court specialist, as her Melbourne record proves. It is no surprise that she has two of four Grand Slam titles in singles here. She's widely regarded as the favourite. Belarusian aggressiveness can demolish even the best-prepared defenders as demonstrated by her win over Elina Svitolina in their semi-final. Rybakina, however, requires more than just raw strength to defeat her. Sabalenka is working on improving her variety, playing forward towards the net and utilizing deft touch to overcome opponents. Her shots are flat, heavy and deep. Sabalenka acknowledged that the material was not an easy one to work with. Sabalenka has a slight advantage over Rybakina in the past, having won eight out of 14 matches, including 2023's Australian Open final. Sabalenka lost their most recent meeting, at the WTA Finals. Pat Cash, the 1987 Wimbledon winner, said: "Sabalenka is a little more powerful and can force Rybakina to areas that she does not want to be. But it's close." The pace of the two players will be fascinating to watch. Sabalenka has always been a consistent player. Sabalenka has been to seven straight major hard court finals. She is only Steffigraf and Martina Hingis who have achieved this feat. Four years in a row, she has reached the Australian Open Finals. This shows her dominance. She acknowledges that she needs to convert consistency into trophy wins. The last year taught me a lot. "I'm prepared to fight this season with all I have," said she. Rybakina: The Case for Rybakina Rybakina is often overlooked because of her calm and understated manner. In this tournament, the 26-year old Kazakh reminded her fans of how good she is. She has not been able to achieve the same heights as she did in 2022. She hasn't played in a Grand Slam since she lost to Sabalenka three years ago. Rybakina's results might not match those of top players such as Sabalenka or Iga Swiatek. Coco Gauff has also steadily improved her game throughout the last two weeks. She said, "The serve may not work the way I would like it to. I have to concentrate on other aspects of my game." I'm trying my best to remain calm and think during the game. "So far it seems to be working." Sabalenka could have a tough time coping with Rybakina if she loses her composure. This final is unpredictable because of her ability to remain calm under pressure. Who will blink first? The Australian Open final may come down to the mental as well as the physical strength of both players. Sabalenka is a player with experience, firepower and calmness. Rybakina provides consistency and calm. Tennis fans should expect an exciting, high-octane match.

Trump Selects Kevin Warsh as Next US Federal Reserve Chair

US President Donald Trump has nominated Kevin Warsh to lead the US Federal Reserve once Jerome Powell’s term ends in May. The decision comes during growing political pressure on the central bank and renewed debate over its independence.

Warsh previously served as a Federal Reserve governor and was also considered for the role during Trump’s first term. His nomination now awaits approval from the US Senate, a process that could take months.

Rising Tensions Between Trump and the Federal Reserve

Trump has openly criticized current Fed chair Jerome Powell for not cutting interest rates fast enough. He has argued that high rates are slowing economic growth and hurting American businesses.

The relationship worsened after federal prosecutors launched a criminal investigation into Powell’s testimony before the Senate. The probe focuses on renovations to Federal Reserve buildings. Powell strongly rejected the allegations and received public support from former central bank leaders.

These events have raised concerns among economists and investors about political influence over the Federal Reserve.

Who Is Kevin Warsh?

Kevin Warsh is a fifty five year old economist and a fellow at the Hoover Institution, a conservative think tank. He also serves on the board of UPS. From two thousand six to two thousand eleven, he worked as a Federal Reserve governor during the global financial crisis.

Warsh built a reputation as a policy hawk during his time at the Fed. He often warned about inflation and supported tighter monetary policy. Recently, however, he has argued that the Fed should lower interest rates while reducing the size of its balance sheet.

He has also criticized the central bank’s heavy dependence on economic data and large asset holdings. Since becoming a leading contender for the role, Warsh has used sharper language and has called for major institutional changes.

What His Appointment Could Mean for Interest Rates

The Federal Reserve recently chose to keep interest rates unchanged, despite pressure from the White House. Inflation remains above the Fed’s two percent target, while job growth has slowed but unemployment has eased slightly.

Economists say Warsh would need strong evidence of weaker labor markets or falling inflation to convince other policymakers to cut rates this year. Analysts at Deutsche Bank believe such conditions may not appear immediately.

Political Ties and Senate Challenges

Warsh has close connections to Trump’s political circle. He is married to Jane Lauder, whose family controls the Estee Lauder cosmetics group. Her father, Ronald Lauder, is a billionaire donor and long time Trump ally.

Meanwhile, Republican Senator Thom Tillis has said he will block Fed nominations until the legal questions around Powell are resolved. Trump has also accused Fed governor Lisa Cook of mortgage fraud, an allegation she denies. The Supreme Court is currently reviewing that case.

Market Reaction and Investor Confidence

As news of Warsh’s nomination surfaced, the US dollar strengthened slightly while gold prices dropped sharply. Market analysts say investors view Warsh as a steady and credible choice.

Capital Economics described him as a relatively safe option who could ease fears of political control over the Fed. Others note that his past hawkish stance may help preserve confidence in the central bank’s independence.

Still, investors plan to watch his actions closely once he takes office.
