Trevor Noah’s Grammys joke sparks backlash
Comedian Trevor Noah made a joke about Donald Trump and Jeffrey Epstein while hosting the Grammy Awards. The comment quickly drew attention online.
Noah said artists want the “Song of the Year” Grammy almost as much as Trump wants Greenland. He then joked that since Epstein’s island is gone, Trump needs a new island to visit with Bill Clinton.
Trump denies the claim and threatens legal action
Trump responded soon after the joke aired. He said the comment was false and damaging.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said he has never visited Epstein’s private island. He also said Noah’s joke wrongly claimed he spent time there.
Trump wrote that he would send his lawyers to sue Noah. He called the joke defamatory. He also insulted Noah and demanded he correct the statement.
Trump added that he cannot speak for Clinton. However, he repeated that he has never been to Epstein’s island or anywhere near it.
Epstein’s case and why the topic remains sensitive
Jeffrey Epstein faced sex trafficking charges before his death. Authorities found him dead in a New York jail cell in 2019. He died while he waited for trial.
Epstein had already been convicted years earlier. That earlier case involved soliciting prostitution from a minor.
Epstein bought his private island in 1998. Several survivors later said traffickers took them there. They also said abusers harmed them on the island.
Trump knew Epstein socially in the past. However, Trump says he did not know about Epstein’s crimes. He also says they stopped associating around 2004.
Trump has not faced charges from Epstein’s victims. The US Justice Department has said allegations about Trump are false.
Clinton has also faced public questions due to Epstein’s network. In 2020, Clinton’s spokesperson said Clinton never visited the island. Clinton has not been accused of wrongdoing.
Trump has a history of suing media outlets
Trump has used lawsuits and legal threats for years. He has targeted multiple media organizations.
Reports note that Trump has pursued legal action against outlets like the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal. He also filed a lawsuit against the BBC in December. That case focused on editing choices in a Panorama program.
