Ukrainian teams sent to Gulf States
Ukraine will send teams of experts in the field to Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and United Arab Emirates to assist with defending against Iranian drones that have been launched as a retaliation to recent US air strikes and Israeli attacks. Volodymyr Zelensky, the Ukrainian president confirmed that US teams were also helping to strengthen their military presence in Jordan.
Zelensky said that Ukraine had “the most experience in the entire world when it comes to countering drone attacks,” thanks to more than four-years of defense against Russian strikes.
Drone Defense Expertise
Ukraine has a relatively secure airspace thanks to its cost-effective and mass-produced drone interceptors. Some Middle Eastern nations have had a difficult time using costly missiles to combat inexpensive Shahed-drones. Ukraine offers its tactical and technological knowledge to Gulf countries.
Politics and Strategy
Zelensky said that Ukraine is expecting tangible assistance in return. He said that those who seek Ukraine’s assistance must also continue to help our defense, especially our air defence. It is important to supply Ukraine with Patriot missiles as well as other systems essential for defending against Russian fast missiles.
This move allows Ukraine to earn money by selling drones that intercept missiles, and strengthens diplomatic relations with Gulf countries who have avoided taking sides during the conflict.
Global Recognition of Ukraine’s Skill
Attention from international partners indicates a change in perception. Zelensky said that the US, as well as ten countries in the Middle East and Europe had requested Ukraine’s help. The move may have boosted Ukraine’s profile internationally, but some officials warn against exaggerating its drone expertise.
Zelensky referred to a prior offer of drones for sale to the US that was rejected a year earlier. It’s great that Kyiv is getting so much help from partners. “The Americans asked and I am proud that we can help them,” said he.
Peace Talks: Implications
This development challenges the claim that Ukraine has no leverage to negotiate with Russia. Trump has in the past favored Russia by demanding that Kyiv surrender areas of Donbas it doesn’t control. Ukraine rejects these demands and continues to rely on its allies for vital military equipment, but shipments are slow and inadequate.
