The 18-year-old was transported to the hospital via emergency chopper after crashing during Thursday’s junior road race.
In a statement released in the wake of the “tragic” news, the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) said: “With the passing of Muriel Furrer, the international cycling community loses a rider with a bright future ahead of her.”
“The Federation Swiss Cycling, Muriel Furrer’s family, and the UCI and the organizing committee of the 2024 UCI Road and Paracycling Road World Championships extend their deepest sympathies to them.
“Muriel Furrer’s family asks that their privacy be respected at this very painful time.”
Swiss Cycling stated on X that they are “broken in heart.”
“We must bid Muriel Furrer farewell with sorrowful hearts and unending sorrow.
“A great, kind young woman who always had a grin on her face is leaving us. There’s simply misery and pain, no understanding.”
The Local Organizing Committee (LOC) for Zurich 2024 expressed earlier on Friday that it was still “extremely concerned” about Furrer’s health.
Nonetheless, it was decided to honor the family’s wishes and carry on with the championship in accordance with the race schedule.
