An NHS doctor explains why he is leaving the ‘broken system’, as British professionals are increasingly sought by international recruiters.

It goes in his bag with the framed family photos and other mementos that remind him of the life he is leaving behind.

Dr Petrie is leaving Leicester for Darwin, Australia.

After only a year as a junior doctor, he’s had enough. He says he can no longer work in a failing healthcare system.

“I’d be dealing with a critically ill patient and having tasks coming through on my phone saying that a patient on the other side of the hospital needs me,” according to Dr. Petrie.

But I know deep down that I won’t get to them on that shift since they’re 43rd on my list and I’ve got patients in front of them.

And you go home after your shift, fatigued but unable to sleep.

You’re considering every single decision you’ve made. You’re scared about making a mistake since you’re exhausted and nervous.

Dr. Petrie claims it’s not about the money. Instead, it’s a lack of respect and inadequate training opportunities.

However, it is ultimately due to his inability to provide adequate care for his patients. His decision to leave the NHS and start a new life on the other side of the world was difficult to accept. He is conflicted.
