Fauci Rejects Covid Hearing Questions
At a contentious US Senate hearing on COVID-19, former top US health official Anthony Fauci declined to answer questions. Claiming he was afraid Republicans would try to exploit his testimony to punish him for perjury.
He cited the US Constitution’s Fifth Amendment, which states that no one may be “compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself.”
He can face legal repercussions if he contradicts himself while testifying. Fauci mentioned that he has given testimony in many congressional sessions regarding Covid and its origins.
Fauci Invokes Fifth Amendment
Republicans have long accused Fauci of lying to the public about the pandemic’s risks and hiding facts about it.
“Although it hurts me to do so because I respect the legislative branch of government, under the advice of my attorneys.
I will invoke my right under the Fifth Amendment of the constitution to refrain from answering your questions.”
Fauci claimed in his speech to the Senate Committee on Homeland Security on Wednesday that he declined to answer questions because of Republican Senator Rand Paul.
Who presided over the meeting had an “obvious obsession” with prosecuting him. Fauci stated, “The only conclusion I can come to is that the only reason.
Despite Fauci’s unwillingness to respond, Paul, an eye surgeon before entering Congress, persisted in interrogating him.
He repeatedly asked Fauci to “apologize” and announced that the committee will vote on a resolution accusing Fauci of contempt of Congress the following week.
Lawyer Defends Fauci In Hearing
Republicans questioned Fauci on how health recommendations evolved throughout the epidemic as medical professionals gained. Fauci has previously defended his stances on policy.
During Paul’s interrogation, David Schertler, one of Fauci’s attorneys who was seated next to him, frequently attempted to interrupt and was kicked out of the room.
Paul’s decision to “exclude his counsel for making a legitimate legal point” was subsequently deemed “outrageous” by Schertler, who added in a statement.
“It proves the baseless and vindictive nature of this proceeding and Rand Paul’s personal vendetta against Dr Fauci.”
