In the year 2018 a sad thing happened in India. Two young men, Abhijeet Nath and Nilotpal Das were killed by a mob after people thought they had done something bad which was not true.
A Road Trip That Ended Badly
Abhijeet Nath, who was 30 years old and a businessman and Nilotpal Das who was 29 years old and a musician left Guwahati to go on a road trip in June 2018. They loved to travel and visit places together.
On that day they drove to the Karbi Anglong region of Assam. By the evening something terrible happened. When they reached a village the people who lived there surrounded them because a rumour spread that they were taking away children.
Mob Attack Because of Rumours
The people who saw what happened told the court that around 150 to 200 people came to the place. At 50 people attacked Abhijeet Nath and Nilotpal Das with sticks and other things.
The mob pulled them out of their car. Beat them very badly. Both Abhijeet Nath and Nilotpal Das died because of their injuries.
The police think that the two men had stopped in Panjuri Kachari village to ask for directions.. A false message on WhatsApp made the people in the village very scared and this led to the violent attack.
At that time similar rumours about people taking away children were spreading in parts of India. Social media was helping to spread fear and wrong information.
Families Find Out What Happened
The families of the victims found out about the incident in a shocking way. Abhijeet Naths father tried to call his son. He could not reach him.
A stranger answered the phone. He also said that the news would be on television soon.
The families quickly went to Karbi Anglong after they heard this news.
Court Decision After Eight Years
In April 2026 a court in Assam made its decision. The court found 20 people guilty of murder. Said they had gathered unlawfully. At the time it said that 25 other people were not guilty because there was not enough evidence.
The court said that the whole village was involved in what happened. It also said that this was not a murder case but a case of many people being violent together.
Families Still Want Justice
They think that more people were responsible, for the crime.Nilotpal Dass father said that the family will talk to their lawyer to decide what to do. For them justice does not feel complete yet.
