Guide Missing After Summit Descent A Nepali climbing guide, Dawa Sherpa, was believed to have died on Mount Everest after going missing during his descent last week. He had been last seen above Camp 3 while returning from the summit at around 7,500m. Conditions at that height are extremely harsh. Oxygen levels are very low, and temperatures can quickly become life threatening. Because of this, hopes for his survival were very low. Found Alive During Descent to Base Camp Six days later, a cleaning team made a shocking discovery. They spotted Dawa Sherpa slowly making his way down through the ice route toward Base Camp. He was crawling and moving with great difficulty. His hands showed signs of frostbite, but he was conscious and responsive. Rescue teams described the moment as extraordinary. One expedition leader said Dawa had survived against all expectations and managed a rare self rescue from extreme altitude. Signs of Survival in Extreme Conditions Experts believe he may have survived by sheltering in tents along the route during his descent. Surviving alone for several days at that altitude is considered almost unheard of. A doctor at Kathmandu HAMS Hospital confirmed that he is awake, receiving treatment, and able to speak. He recognized medical staff and responded clearly. His family also confirmed their relief after seeing him alive in hospital after fearing the worst. Family Reaction and Emotional Relief Before he was found, his wife had already performed final prayers, believing he would not return. After his rescue, his daughter shared that the family was overwhelmed with relief and happiness upon learning he had survived. Eyewitness Account From Fellow Climber A fellow climber recalled descending with Dawa Sherpa after the summit attempt. He described Dawa as calm and confident before they separated during the descent. The climber later continued downward with another teammate, but Dawa Sherpa did not return with them, leading to fears that he had been lost on the mountain. Everest Season Marked by High Risk This year has been deadly on Everest, with several climber deaths reported, including Nepali guides involved in expedition support work. At the same time, the season has seen more than 1,000 successful summits, making it one of the busiest climbing periods in recent years. The high number of climbers has also increased pressure on routes and safety operations.

The aim is to speed up VAR decisions and reduce long stoppages during matches. Assistant referees will now receive instant audio alerts when a player is more than 10cm offside. This update means the assistant does not always need to wait for play to fully continue before reacting. However, the assistant referee still controls when to raise the flag and stop the game. How the New System Works The new technology builds on earlier versions tested at major tournaments such as the Club World Cup and the Intercontinental Cup. Earlier systems only triggered alerts when a player was clearly offside by more than 50cm. The updated version increases precision and reacts to tighter margins. FIFA has also added safeguards. If there is any suspicion of a technical fault, officials can ignore the alert and rely on standard judgment. Limits of the Technology The system does not solve every offside situation. It still struggles with very tight calls where players are almost level. It also becomes less reliable when players are on the ground or when multiple players are close together. It is designed only for positional offside decisions. It cannot decide subjective cases, such as whether a player interfered with an opponent without touching the ball. AI Player Scanning and 3D Models FIFA will also use AI powered 3D avatars of every player at the tournament. All 1,248 players across the 48 teams will be digitally scanned during pre tournament sessions. Each scan takes about a second and is done once during official photo shoots. These digital models will help produce clearer and more accurate offside graphics for TV broadcasts. Safety Concerns Behind the Change The move also responds to concerns about delayed flags and player safety. In one serious incident in 2025, Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi suffered a severe injury after a delayed offside decision led to continued play. FIFA hopes faster alerts will reduce these risks and prevent unnecessary collisions during live play. What Fans Can Expect At the 2026 World Cup, fans should see quicker decisions, fewer long VAR pauses, and clearer offside visuals on screen. The goal is a smoother viewing experience with fewer controversial delays.

Tata Steel Theft Case: Workers Jailed After £1.2m Tin Heist From Welsh Steelworks Major theft uncovered at Trostre steel plant A major theft case at Tata Steel’s Trostre site in Llanelli, Carmarthenshire, has led to prison sentences for three workers and one accomplice after they stole around 50 tonnes of tin ingots worth nearly £1.2 million. The crime took place between July 2023 and October 2024 and involved repeated removal of valuable metal from the steelworks. How the operation worked Court hearings revealed that Matthew Membury, aged 32, made multiple trips into the site using a transit van. He gained access with a fake ID that had been provided by security supervisor Stewart Jones. When the plant was quiet, Membury was allowed entry and coordinated the removal of tin ingots. Inside the facility, cast house supervisor Thomas Ashford used a forklift to load the tin into the van. After that, Membury drove the stolen material off-site and sold it to scrap dealers. Stewart Jones also sent messages to warn when conditions were safe for the thefts to take place. Payments and profit split Investigators found that Membury received about £740,000 from scrap sales, but kept around £340,000 for himself. Ashford took more than £250,000 from the operation. Stewart Jones received over £80,000, while Richard Jones was paid around £60,000. Arrest and discovery The group was arrested in October 2024 after they were caught trying to leave the site with stolen tin. Police also found three swords inside the back of Membury’s van during a follow up search. Sentences handed down At Swansea Crown Court, Thomas Ashford and Stewart Jones were both jailed for three years and four months. Richard Jones received a 20 month suspended sentence, along with unpaid work and a curfew order. Membury, who did not appear in court for sentencing, is already serving a separate 32 month prison term for arson. His new sentence will be added once he appears before the court. Recovery of stolen money The Crown Prosecution Service has confirmed it will begin proceedings to recover the criminal proceeds from the case.
